Gateway Regional Medical Center Unveils Cutting-Edge Surgical Robot - Da Vinci 5

Gateway Regional Medical Center is pleased to announce the recent acquisition of the Intuitive da Vinci 5 surgical system, designed with the goal of further advancing technology used in minimally invasive care.
Da Vinci 5 is Intuitive’ s most advanced and integrated platform—designed to transform surgery to enable better outcomes, efficiency, and actionable insights. The system can be used for minimally invasive surgical procedures for urology, gynecology, thoracic, and general surgeries.
This system enables surgeons to feel more and see more during procedures with a next-generation 3D display and image processing. The da Vinci 5 provides new surgeon controllers, making their movements smoother and more precise. In addition, the new system has innovative features that help streamline surgeon and care team workflow with an optimized user interface.
Compared to open surgery, robotic and minimally invasive surgery results in smaller incisions resulting in less pain and scarring. Robotic surgery allows surgeons to perform complex surgical tasks through tiny incisions using robotic technology. When performing robotic surgery using the Da Vinci Surgical System:

  • The surgeon works from a computer console in the operating room, controlling miniaturized instruments mounted on three robotic arms to make tiny incisions in the patient.
  • The surgeon looks through a 3-D camera attached to a fourth robotic arm, which magnifies the surgical site.
  • The surgeon’s hand, wrist and finger movements are transmitted through the computer console to the instruments attached to the robot’s arms. The mimicked movements have the same range of motion as the surgeon allowing maximum control.
  • The surgical team supervises the robot at the patient’s bedside.
We are thrilled to be a leader in this field and look forward to continually bringing Granite City and surrounding areas advanced minimally invasive surgical options.
Gateway Regional Medical Center will demonstrate the new da Vinci 5 system on March 20, 2025, in the presence of medical students, medical faculty, and community.
